LONG JUMP HUGE DISTANCES - IT'S WHAT YOU DO BEFORE TAKE-OFF!
In this video I take a look at the specific make-up of the last three long jump run-up steps and how to get the most from them. This is a very specific skill and I use Miltiadis Tentoglu as an exemplar together with one of my jumpers (17-year-old Bora from Hungary) to explain what to do.
Video Time-line
0.00min: Intro
Elite long jumpers do something very specific on the last three steps
0.14min A look at Miltiadis Tentogolu... study the stills
0.41min: It's all to do with speed transfer
And the requirement to produce horizontal and vertical velocity at the point of take-off.
Being able to do that is what sets apart a great long jumper from a sprinter who jumps
1.10min: How one of the jumpers in my group 17-year-old Bora has learnt how to get the required take-off
1.30min: A study of the last 3 steps
1.58min: This "sets the jump"
I talk about foot positions
Rhythm is crucial
2.38min: Movement from step 3 to step 2
Step quickly and deliberately
3.05min: Drills which can be used to develop the last 3 steps
3.22min: The importance of eccentric strength
3.33min: Changing from a long and slow last stride - it can be done
3.53min: So take a really good look when you see elite jumpers in action and see what they do - that's really see!
4.07min: Positive response to hurdles videos
4.14min: Antepes Muscle Runners - the trainer that thinks it's a spike

I have often added more scientific and biomechanical knowledge to my experiential knowledge and self-developed understanding of how to coach the long jump over the years. Doing this can bolster what ...
ANTEPES MUSCLE RUNNER: TRAINING SHOE THINKS 🤔 IT’S A SPIKE - GREAT FOR SPRINTERS, JUMPERS & RUNNERS

I have been testing the new Antepes Muscle Runners. These shoes are different. They are designed to produce a forefoot strike and are shaped much more like a track spike than a running shoe. Hence they make a great shoe for sprinters, jumpers and hurdlers (and team sport players) looking for a go-virtually anywhere intermediate option between trainers and spikes. These shoes have the added adva...

    similar to the way a basketball player takes off, even though it appears like they are putting on the brakes by stepping ahead of the body, the speed loads up and as you say transfers to the foot for a higher vertical. it's a balance between vertical and horizontal speed.

      Yes, some of the group do work without shoes to specifically strengthen their feet. This guy needs to do this and has become able over time to be able to run fast without shoes. Feet are somewhat obviously the foundations for performance,

    Do you have any tips for running through the triple jump takeoff? I’m getting too high up and lose a lot of horizontal momentum. As a result I crash down and can’t execute my step-phase very well. Thanks!

    I have heard said that much of what is effective for the long jump (in terms of increasing power, foot work, controlling speed) can also be applied to helping high jumpers as well. What are your thoughts on that idea? As a high school high jump coach, I am always on the lookout for new training ideas.

    • @Johnshepherdtrackcoach
      @Johnshepherdtrackcoach 12 днів тому

      Of course there are similarities between the jumps …. Approach speed and contact time at take-off is slower than the long jump for the high jump. The board contact time in the LJ is circa 1100ms for the HJ 1500/1600 ms similar the step and jump phases in the TJ. So, if I were coaching HJ I’d be looking at working around these latter contact times for plyo work in the main. I’d also be looking at more vertical displacement jumps and specific eccentric drills to develop the block-stop needed to transfer very directly horizontal to vertical velocity. This is much more of a requirement for the HJ as opposed to the LJ obviously. Hope this helps a bit.

    Great review and the shoes look very interesting and are somewhat cheaper (150,- euros) than other brand shoes with carbon plate sole. Because of achilles problems I do my track running wearing Nike Zoom Fly 5. I even use them for long jumping......

    • @Johnshepherdtrackcoach
      @Johnshepherdtrackcoach 14 днів тому

      Many thanks … I think the ANTEPES have a re use for training - you can, as I say in the video, use them for off track running and plyos. The two athletes in my group trialling them really do seem to be getting a lot out of them and like you are jumping in them as well (well you are using your Nike’s). Achilles issues/problems have to be managed and wearing the “right” shoes is important i that respect. Isometric and eccentric work as you will no doubt be aware of can do much to alleviate issues.

    Hi John, But may I ask, how do heptathletes and decathletes do it then? Because they train for about 7 to 10 events. Yet the best decathletes can jump 8m.. average in around 7.60m + I understand it's not elite pure long jump standard.. But the third best decathlete, could essentially win the men's T20 long jump. As the leading distance for our category is 7.30m.. I know having a learning disability plays a part as to why circumstances may play to a limiting factor.. but still. Are you able to explain that please? I am a T20 myself, a 100 m sprinter.. that went to 400m.. pretty much struggled. Due to natural lack of aerobic endurance. (When i did work on it, slowed me down dramatically). Now thinking of giving long jump another shot. I do have a long jump PB of 5.90m some years ago. And I foul jumped roughly a 6.50m. my foot was just touching the plastercine when i did that jump lol

    • @Johnshepherdtrackcoach
      @Johnshepherdtrackcoach 14 днів тому

      I think that very often multi event athletes are predisposed to the long jump/hurdles in many cases. I have coached numerous heptathletes and long jump has often been their number 1 event. If you can run fast, are specifically powerful and have a good take-off then long distances will come. I have also coached T20 jumpers - two males over 6m, for example. One 6.50m. I think given what you say you should return to the long jump … focus on specific speed development and the take-off and you will jump far. Good luck.

    landing with heel?

    • @Johnshepherdtrackcoach
      @Johnshepherdtrackcoach 12 днів тому

      For bounding for triple jump purposes the heel ideally should lead the foot into the contact which is then flat. This when combined with an active pulling back of the foot will permit greater forward momentum transference.
